Functions of the transmission system

Requirements and the main functions of the transmission system

Vehicle transmissions mediate between the engine and the drive wheels. The transmission adapts the power output to the power requirement by converting torque and rotational speed. The power requirement at the drive wheels is determined by the driving resistance

The four main functions/ requirements of a transmission system are

  1. Enable the vehicle to move-off from rest.
  2. Adapt power flow. Convert output torque and output speed. Enable reverse motion.
  3. Enable permanent power transmission. Positive or force locking engine power transmission with minimal loss.
  4. Control power matching.

In addition to these four main requirements/functions, there are ancillary transmission requirements also known as operational requirements. These are

  • operational reliability
  • gear box cost
  • ease of operation
  • power matching
  • efficiency
  • installation, dimension and weight
  • customisability
  • emission (noise, oil etc)
